Dave Summa is creative strategist, innovative thinker and tenacious problem solver. With more than 30 years of C-suite and consulting experience, Dave has a track record of making growth happen in the ag, life science and clean tech industries.
Dave’s career has several distinct phases. Currently, Dave is a partner in Business Model Innovations, a professional service firm. He helps clients with C-level acting management assignments, traditional consulting projects, and CEOs ‘sparring’ – a more operationally engaged form of coaching. His BMI clients include JNJ, Amgen, Peaxy, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Apex Wind Energy, Sage Glass (St. Gobain), Cargill, DSM, the Emir of Qatar, Scott’s Lawn & Garden, several venture capital funds including Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Versant Ventures and 5AM, and numerous startups. Prior to BMI, Dave was a CEO at three startups over a 10-year period in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Kinestral (electrochromic windows), Acumen Pharmaceuticals (Alzheimer’s therapeutics) and Mendel Biotechnology (genomics). Prior to moving the Bay Area, Dave was a partner at McKinsey & Company, Inc. where he led the Global Innovation Practice. Dave started his career in product development at Procter & Gamble continued it at Monsanto in the 1980s and mid-1990s. Dave also has over 55 board-years of service on Boards of Directors. He brings operating, consulting and board-level experience to his clients and to his group member in the Alliance.
Dave has a robust deal sheet including nine financings, licensing deals worth more than $300 million, M&A deals exceeding $500 million, and the creation of three large joint ventures with Fortune 500 partners. Dave has developed business plans and pitch decks for 5 clients resulting in successful funding of more than $400M.
Dave graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Dave is an avid swimmer and astrophotographer.
